LA Sports Media At Spectrum SportsNet’s Basketball Clinic

Professional sports teams have long provided a common ground for people to root for, even serving as a staple in their local communities. One would be hard-pressed to find a sports franchise that better exemplifies this than the Los Angeles Lakers.

Aside from the 16 NBA championships, countless legendary players and the long list of records, those involved with the franchise have strived to make an even bigger impact in the city of Los Angeles. Spectrum SportsNet recently partnered with LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program to host a number of students from Toland Way Elementary and Fletcher Drive Elementary for a basketball clinic led by none other than James Worthy, Derek Fisher, and Chris McGee.

After being split into purple and gold teams, Worthy and Fisher coached the kids about the fundamentals of the game before ending the day with a little friendly competition. Both Lakers legends spoke afterward on the importance of strengthening the connection between the team and the communities in and around Los Angeles.

“It’s critical to be involved with your community,” Worthy said. “The people who work in your parking lots, concession stands, the people that buy tickets… you want that synergy because it makes you appreciate each other more.”

As both a player and head coach, Fisher knows first-hand how unique the relationship between the Lakers and city is.

“It’s important for all teams, but I think here in L.A. in particular,” Fisher said. “It’s not just the success of the teams in the past that has brought a connection between the players and the city, but I truly believe the fans here that support the team feel like the players are a part of the community. I think this young team now, they have a few guys that have been here for a few years now and will hopefully start to feel a part of this community and try to give back to it in a way that will last for years after they stop bouncing a basketball.”

The Lakers serve as the top team in a city best known as the entertainment capital of the world. However, it is those within the community that have helped launch this team amongst the most elite sports franchises. Through Spectrum SportsNet’s basketball clinic, it provided another opportunity for players like Worthy and Fisher to strengthen their connection with the Los Angeles community.
