Los Angeles Lakers legends Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal once formed arguably the most dynamic duo in NBA history. However, the prospect of playing with Cleveland Cavaliers star forward LeBron James was seemingly too much for even Bryant to bear.
The five-time champ recently sat down for an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Jemele Hill. During that time he was asked whether he would have selected O’Neal or James in a hypothetical All-Star Draft following the former’s departure from Los Angeles. Needless to say, Bryant gave a rather surprising answer:
Bryant’s decision certainly comes to the dismay of Lakers fans everywhere. However, before airing out any frustrations with his pick, it should be noted that the criteria set fell heavily in James’ favor.
He was asked which player he would rather have shared the court with following O’Neal’s bitter exit from the Lakers. This was after all the championships and drama that had ensued between the two. Needless to say, any chemistry they once had was long gone at that point.
Meanwhile, Bryant has been on record saying that James would be one of the players he would love to have on his team. Fortunately, the two were able to get a taste of what it would have been like as members of the United States men’s national team during the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
