in Lakers, NewsLakers News: Kyle Kuzma Picks Donovan Mitchell Over Ben Simmons As Rookie Of The Year by Maximo Gonzales April 16, 2018, 6:00 AM Photo Credit: Phillip Faraone/Getty Images It goes without saying that the rookie class in the 2017-18 NBA season was one of the most talented in recent years. However, it is clear that the Rookie of the Year award has come down to a two-man race between Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell and Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons. There has been plenty of discussions to which player is more deserving of the honor. Los Angeles Lakers power forward Kyle Kuzma gave his pick during an appearance on ESPN’s The Jump:“I mean, they’re both great players at the end of the day. They both put up phenomenal numbers, triple-doubles, both teams are in the playoffs. For me, I would probably pick Mitchell. Just for the simple fact he’s in the West, it’s a lot harder, and to lead them to a fifth seed in the West… They could be [co-Rookies of the Year].” Kuzma added that he thinks Mitchell’s case for a “true rookie” should also be taken into account.“It’s a little different, at the same time I understand everybody’s debate. But, I mean, you’re in an NBA system for a whole entire year, you’re training, you’re getting paychecks, you’re adjusting to life sooner than a rookie who would have to be playing at the same time. I see both, but I’d probably say if you’re a rookie with your true class, like that.”As of right now, the odds seem to be in Simmons’ favor given his historic year and what he has been able to accomplish from both an individual and team standpoint. However, the same can easily be said for Mitchell’s stellar campaign. As a result, there has been plenty of debate as to whether or not Simmons should be considered since this is technically his second season with the Sixers. Regardless, both have made compelling cases to take home the award.Meanwhile, Kuzma has been no slouch himself. After being taken with the 27th overall pick, he has long established himself as the biggest steal of the draft. As a fellow overlooked NBA prospect, perhaps Kuzma has a soft spot for what Mitchell has been able to do in his rookie year. However, it is safe to assume that all three will be featured on the All-Rookie First Team.
