In the last several months, things have become a bit unraveled with the San Antonio Spurs revolving around the long-term future of All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard. All of this has led to trade rumors arising with talk that he could be on the move over the offseason via a trade.
As a result, the Los Angeles Lakers are among several teams into the that possibly serve as a potential landing spot in the upcoming summer. According to OddsShark, the Lakers currently hold third-highest betting odds to acquire the 26-year-old:

All of this chatter has begun to mount to the possibility that Leonard could realistically be traded over the offseason. There has been a serious disconnect between himself of the Spurs’ organization that stems from the nagging quad injury that had also forced him to miss the entire 2017-18 campaign. There has been some internal pushback that has led to Leonard taking control of the situation by getting examined by doctors away from the team.
With that being said, Leonard’s situation could take another drastic turn this upcoming summer with him being eligible to receive a super-max contract that will be north of $200 million over five years. The manner in which the Spurs handle that scenario will be a huge determining factor for what will happen to the two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Leonard is currently set to enter the fourth year of his five-year, $94.3 million deal that includes a $21.3 million player option for the 2019-20 season. If the super-max contract isn’t offered, then it presents the situation of him being available in the trade market
Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as an intriguing landing spot due to their promising level of success this year getting back into the playoffs while winning 52 games in the regular season behind their two young rising stars. Meanwhile, the Lakers saw some encouraging improvement this season with their young core group leading the way that has put a promising future ahead of them.
Nonetheless, this is certainly a situation that the Lakers will keep their eyes on as the offseason draws closer.
