After a brutal December stretch of games, the Los Angeles Lakers have finally begun to resemble a competent team. After their most recent victory against the San Antonio Spurs, the Lakers now own a three-game winning streak and are slowly climbing out of the basement of the league’s standings.
The team has been unable to avoid drama, however, as LaVar Ball has directed comments toward the coaching staff, particularly Luke Walton. While Walton’s job as head coach is seemingly safe, there are rumblings that things could very well change.
I got executives in my ear, I got agents in my ear, saying, ‘Oh yeah, they’re probably going to hire David Fizdale.”
David Fizdale was let go earlier in the 2017-2018 NBA season by the Memphis Grizzlies, a surprising move given his success with the team. Despite some of the issues Walton has had to work through during his early tenure in Los Angeles, there are no other indications that the front office is looking to move one from him given his popularity in the locker room.
While the purple and gold are likely to miss the playoffs once again, it should not matter given that this season is more of a developmental one for the team’s young players. A coaching change would disrupt the progress the Lakers have been able to make and is unlikely at this point in time.
