The Los Angeles Lakers seem to finally be making progress on the court despite losing their recent preseason game against the Utah Jazz. The young Lakers are taking steps forward on the defensive side of the ball while also getting out and initiating early offense off opponent misses.

Heralded rookie Lonzo Ball has not seen much preseason action after spraining his ankle, but Kyle Kuzma has been nothing short of a revelation. The 27th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft has proven he can do anything on the floor and is has easily been Los Angeles’ best player in the early going.

According to Joey Ramirez of Lakers, Luke Walton is convinced his rookie small forward needs to play meaningful minutes during the 2017-2018 NBA season:

Kuzma’s forced his way into the idea that we’re gonna find minutes for him,” Walton said. “… We’re going to find a way to keep him on the court no matter what the rotations end up being.”

The Utah product is quickly becoming the favorite for this year’s steal of the draft as his versatility is a breath of fresh air for a Lakers team devoid of scoring and playmaking. Kuzma is looking like the modern power forward that every team covets and this only bodes well for the purple and gold’s future success.

With another blue chip prospect on the roster, Los Angeles may finally have all the building blocks it needs to sustain continued success. It will be interesting to see if Kuzma can continue his high level of play when the games begin to matter.
